The actress carried the show for me and made me watch on. In the beginning I didn't like her for several reasons, but either I've gotten used to it or she outgrew those reasons a male lead finally has some expressions after that many episodes. He is costumes are nice, they did a fine job with interior decorations. The rooms were crafted well. The worst effect/music choice I've come across so far in a give it a 5, because I think the other music was at least decent. But described sound/music was the beginning there was some plot, but it gradually became less and lost traction. Now even if new plot elements seem to plop up, I feel bored about them and don't bother investing comedic relief didn't work for me. Yunxi didn't have enough funny scenes to make up for it and I started to strongly dislike Tang Li's character, who seems to was supposed to be a comedic kept it flat. And I really had to warm up to her first, too since I felt she had a forced entry. The male lead often doesn't do it for me. He seems too little involved with his surroundings and some of his decisions are not what I'd expect from a male hero, even controversial. Somehow he doesn't pop out, he just looks handsome, that's it. Story Acting/Cast Music Rewatch Value A good Vintage piece For a 2018 drama, I feel like this drama aged fairly well. It has all the 2018 writing classic and didn't realized it was the same actors from The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion and I'm glad they got to work together again. I really enjoyed the acting from the FL, I think Ju Jing Yi is an adorable and very pretty actress. I felt like she gave really great chemistry and even though her character was up and down for me, she played it feel like Zhang Zhe Han has improved a lot from this drama. In The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion he basically had the same character role, but had a lot more emotion and depth in that one. In The Legend of Yan Xi, he was very stiff and at times I thought the drama was on pause because he never moved his eyes or facial expressions. Other than that, he was nice to look at and who can complain about the scene scenes? Of course the costume and CGI isn't up to par to what we watch now, 4 years later, but at the time, it looked pretty grand. I'm glad we have moved away from gaudy sets and more subdue looks and muted color tones. The first few episodes were hard to get through, only because the FL had to go through some hardships and I wasn't a fan of that, but towards the middle, it really picked up and I liked the antics they were getting into. Read More Was this review helpful to you? This C-drama known as “The legend of Yunxi” and which has a novel and manhwa series too, was the first historical drama I watched. I have watched slice-of-life dramas before but nothing like a fantasy historical mix. And I have to admit I definitely liked this one. How did I stumble upon it? Well thanks to YouTube, it was recommending me a clip from the drama and I saved it to watch later. I happened to see the watch-later list of mine waiting for me. And well the rest was an amazing watching experience. Chinese dramas for one, have a really slow pace, they dig into the world and character building and reach climax a bit slowly. Sometimes it’s unnecessary to drag the story and sometimes the story needs more elements. I actually wanted there to be more episodes of this drama or maybe a season 2 would have sufficed but oh well , we’ll see. This drama aired in 2018, and shows a traditional setting, old era when people were always at war. The setting was really beautiful. The imagery was done well. The CGI did kinda make me cringe at first but it wasn’t overdone so I was okay with it. The flow was especially well. And the actors and actresses should be applauded for their outstanding performance in portraying those characters. The story revolves around the fate of two people and an imperial palace . This palace is nothing ordinary with people always plotting, always after the throne, always backstabbing. But what brought the two people together is rather interesting. Be warned there are spoilers ahead. Tianing won after overthrowing another empire. The emperor dies later on leaving his consorts and sons the emperor Tian wei, and long Feiye. Well Feiye actually dies but no one knows and a man from the rival empire takes the role. It becomes quite interesting as Tian wei is actually afraid of Feiye’s power but for this very reason Tian wei’s mother marries Feiye to Han Yunxi, a doctor and a poison expert. Now there are a lot of divisions in the palace itself. I won’t spoil that but too many mysteries and too many plots. I personally felt long tianmoemperor’s son was kind of weak, but his brother was no good either. In the end tianmo did actually do great I think. Better than Tianqing at least. Feiye was never after the throne . I loved his character. The most cold, and calculating prince disguised as someone else whose only weakness was the poison expert Yunxi. His acting was brilliant. The actor did a brilliant job. Feiye and yunxi’s moments were cute and lovely. I think people would dislike how cold stone faced he is in the start , or how he distances himself from Yunxi and others to protect them, but you have to understand his point of view. I didn’t at all hate his character because he needed to do that. It’s exactly what made it all so sad. The second lead’s acting was quite good too and who can’t say He isn’t handsome , hell even Feiye’s assistant was handsome and Feiye’s brother too. I would like to take a moment to explain the ending since it confused many people. I think episode 48 should have been final . But episode 49 explained it further and still was episode 48. stay warned of the spoilers No Yunxi doesn’t die. Well she doesn’t in the novel as far as I know. And no yunxi’s bracelet couldn’t have saved her mother because she didn’t have the bracelet when she fell down the cliff while yunxi had it when she stabbed herself. I guess the episode showed how the bracelet extracted its life force and put it in Yunxi. As for who saved Gu Qishao, I think it was Yuze based on the scene. So in the end she is actually there with prince Qin in the field while Gu Qishao doesn’t really know. But alas writers cut a few parts of this same episode and made it look like an alternate ending where Yunxi dies. It’s up to you viewers to choose the ending you want. Epsidode 49 or 50tho 48 is the last rest are extra. Now that this is explained I can move onto gush on how cute Tang Li and Ninjiang were. I absolutely loved Consort Yi and how she starts to treat Yunxi as her own daughter. Hu Bin actually doesn’t look his age haha. That Beili Minxiang was annoying but alas that was because the actress portrayed it good enough to be hated. Xi feng was cute with Zhuyu. Doctor Han was also great as soon as you learn his story you won’t hate him. As for poison master , well…idk I have mixed feelings. But the emperor’s advisor was loathesome lol. Empress Dowager was also the cruelest , she basically caused the havoc in the harem. Consort Qing was clever as well , but in the end she develops feelings for the Emperor. I was actually expecting a huge fight in the end but I guess this much did do well. Because it was light hearted and I absolutely loved the characters. It actually gave me blues after I ended it. I enjoyed each episode slowly because I knew I’d not want the series to end. This manor is mine. And you are, of Yun Xi Let it be said that I adore the enemies/strangers to lovers tropes. I do. When it’s well done. But you see this quote up there? Yeah? Yeah. A Good Start There was a lot of potential in Legend of Yun Xi. The arranged marriage cliché can be exceedingly charming when done well, and the lighthearted atmosphere of the show could have worked really well. Alas, the script persisted in going for the bad rather than the good, and by the time I got to midpoint of Legend of Yun Xi, I was cringing more often than not. Let me explain. While the first few episodes started out rather well with a determined heroine who, instead of going to her arranged marriage like a lamb to slaughter, has her own agenda and a male protagonist the very definition of stoic badass, Legend of Yun Xi quickly ended up resorting to eternal clichés and abusive relationships. How? Simple. Down We Go Let’s start with the main romance. While the male lead does show on occasion that he cares for his wife, the numerous occurrences of him just expecting her to serve him like some glorified slave, saying that she belongs to him, locking her up in her rooms, and so on just made me cringe so hard it was horrifying. His noble idiot moment, which we’re supposed to believe happens because he wants to protect her, is rendered moot by the fact that she has literally nowhere to go, which he’s aware of. Which brings me to the second unhealthy aspect of this supposed “romance” Han Yun Xi’s life revolves around Long Fei Ye. Every single thing she does is related to him in some way or other. When he’s not there, she’s thinking of him. When they’re fighting, she’s staring longingly at the door, waiting. When she’s hanging out with her “friends”, she’s only ever doing it so she can get something for him. She’s got nothing and nobody that’s her own, and nowhere to go should he one day get tired of her. She’s completely dependent on his good will. Ever Heard About Communication? Also, I just kept having the feeling that he whistled her to heel whenever he needed her medical skills, then sent her back to her courtyard like some sort of glorified dog. Basically, he was using her. And whenever they had an argument, she was always the one to apologize, even if the only reason she’d made a mistake was because he kept not telling her things. So many times things could have worked out so much better if he’d only just talked to her instead of just retreating into his palace of machismo to plan with his men. Romance Who? Don’t Know Her. You know what else bothered me? It’s that they never fought for each other. Every time he distanced himself from her, she demurely stepped back, and every time she had an issue with him, he turned himself into a wall of ice until the storm was gone. They never talked their issues out, only allowed them to pass and then carried on as if nothing had happened. In the end, I could never believe in that love because they just… never held on to each other. Although it’s true that Yun Xi’s entire life quickly started to revolve around Long Fei Ye, which… not healthy. As for the secondary relationship. Oh wow. I’ve rarely seen anything so blatantly abusive. The girl has been bullying the guy ever since they were children. So of course, he doesn’t want to marry her. Cue her stalking him 24/7, going so far as to drugging him and tying him to his bed so she can sleep with him not in the sex sense but still and, wait for it… tricking him into marrying her. Excuse me while I go combust somewhere. And the worst part of it all is that literally everybody around them thinks it’s normal. Not one of those people steps in, instead laughing at this poor man for being “bossed around” by a girl. A Word to Young People Everywhere Of course, he falls for her anyway. Let it be known to young men everywhere that if a girl stalks and hits and drugs you, she’s definitely the one for you. Now that I think about it, also let it be known to young women everywhere that if a man tells you you belong to him, calls you only when he needs you to do something for him, and never apologizes, then he’s the one for you, too. Deep breaths. Boring Plot-wise, well. I fast-forwarded on all of the politics, the royal harem inner wars, and prince battles—though I did take the time to feel sorry for the crown prince. That wasn’t why I was there. There were one part that I definitely would have loved to see more of, namely the white-haired supersoldiers there was one scene there that was really powerful at the beginning of the show, but the effect of which Legend of Yun Xi tragically failed to ever reproduce over the course of the next 45 episodes. It was certainly an interesting concept, but poorly developed. It was all just so… predictable. Finally, the acting was nothing to fawn over. While Zhang Zhe Han is certainly very handsome, his expression range seems limited to widening his eyes in a threatening way. In fact, his face is so stiff that it feels unnatural to see him smile when it does happen, which isn’t very often, let me tell you. Ju Jing Yi was fine, but her part wasn’t a very emotional one, and her character wasn’t that deep, so there wasn’t that much for her to demonstrate either. In fact, I think Yalkun Merxat was the one who stood out the most, probably because his boyish excitement at seeing his crush and overall playful demeanor was infinitely more endearing and sympathy-inducing than Zhang Zhe Han’s expressionlessness. I mean, I like tall, dark and broody as much as anyone else but there’s such a thing as too much, you know. Why the Love Triangle, Why? Speaking of Yalkun Merxat, I made myself silently suffer through 48 episodes of love triangle but.. I don’t get why he’s in love with her? In fact, I don’t get why Long Fei Ye is in love with her either. I mean, she’s bright and cheerful and puts up with a lot of crap but… she keeps being led around by the nose by literally everyone and their mother, remains horribly submissive to her ungrateful husband, falls into traps left and right, has to be rescued all the time… Even her medical skills aren’t her own, but came from a magical bracelet that has literally no use but to impart her with instant knowledge. Because studying is for losers, obviously. In the end, the production quality might have made up for some of this, but it really didn’t, because it was terrible. I like to think I’m nice enough as an audience, and I don’t have the sharpest eye when it comes to CGI so I’m pretty tolerant, but even I could tell right from episode 1 that the special effects were just bad. It felt like watching those old computer games from the 90s where stuff would go through walls and characters would have the weirdest movements. This was the exact same thing. The sound mixing was absolutely horrible as well. There were two episodes in the first ten where I could hardly hear the awkward and repetitive dialogue since the music was so loud, and it just feels like there wasn’t a single moment of silence after that. The music was mostly dissonant, never matching the scenes, which just killed the atmosphere for pretty much the entire show. All in All… …You might have noticed, but Legend of Yun Xi made me a teeny tiny bit angry. I was going to give it two stars because it still had a weird charm and a few cute scenes that helped me suffer through its entirety, but I’ll take one off because it was just so painful to force myself through the second half. In this drama, it was really the characters that added spice and their unique traits which added flavour to the PLOTIt is quite a typical plot if you have watched a lot of historical dramas and in particular, fantasy ones involving different dimensions. So if you are just venturing into this genre of dramas, I do believe it will mostly be interesting and likeable for you guys. However, if you are not new to the scene, this drama might bore you as you would be able to generally gauge how the whole series will play out. Personally, I watched the first few episodes and it started to get bland for me because all the scheming, trickery and relationships could be guessed easily. For some reason, I just gritted my teeth and continued. Eventually, with the support of the wonderful OSTs, I managed to weather through the next few episodes. It got better mainly because of the characters and I encourage you to continue watching if you can tolerate repetition because it does get interesting. Furthermore, the world building is quite unique with the Gu-abetted men and that was a plus point for me to keep watching because it was a different angle to take in these CHARACTERSIt was the characters which made the story interesting. Each and every one of them all became so loveable to me. With Long Feiye, I adore how he is so stoic for the first half or so but I could see the progress of his relationship with Han Yunxi evident in him becoming more open with is display of outward affection. I like how he is so steady and sharp with every calculation. He really cares for his friends and family, going out of his way to help them. Yunxi is so persistent, resolute in her decisions, honest and also unknowingly cruel. I respect how she makes clear her affections for Feiye especially towards Gu Qishao but also the part in the end where she forced Qishao's hand. Overall, I believe the characters made the drama so lively and eventually lead me to feel so attached to this EMOTIONSSince I grew attached to the characters, undoubtedly the emotions would be overwhelming for me. The one that struck me the most was how painful Gu Qishao's journey through this story was. H efaced so many adversities and nothing was easy for him. The part where Yunxi forced Qishao's hand n a certain matter was acutely painful No one was there to support him and he was the lone wolf to contend with the whole process, the event prior to, the aftermath and the visuals. I realised what a cruel hand the story dealt him and I felt deep sympathy for him. The relationship between Consort Dowager Yi and Yunxi was a deeply satisfying one for me. I truly enjoyed their relationship progress and that was a true enemies to lovers trope right there. Their progress invoked so many emotions because you can see every single stepping stone they took was a wonderful one which makes me miss the drama so much more as I am writing this review a few days later. Of course, we cannot miss out the main leads of the story. Unlike the rest, Theirs was a love that is normal and beautiful in its own way but it did not make me yearn for the story not to end. In fact, it was their chemistry that made it memorable for me. They were so good working together, one person healing with poison, the other toiling tirelessly for his people. i loved that ultimately they supported each other out in the open and behind the scenes, they did even more to hold each other up, be it consciously or unconsciously. There were no jarring plot holes and their acting was also good but not memorable. I did find the first few episodes confusing as well with how it was structured to go from the present then to the past to a flashback and then replay that present scene all over the characters and their resulting relationships made the drama impactful for me and I urge you to endure the first quarter at least in order to enjoy the drama.
